Brexit is short for saying “British Exit” from the European Union.
Great Britain is a small Island in the North Atlantic Ocean. The English Channel separates Southern England from Northern France. The size of Britain is just 93,627.8 square miles. It is so small in fact that you can literally drive from one end to another in about 13 hrs.
Great Britain is made up of the countries of England, Scotland and Wales, while the United Kingdom is made up of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Britain has been, and still is, part of the European Union.
So what exactly is the European Union? The European Union is made up of about 28 countries including France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Greece and of course, Great Britain. The currency used by most countries of the European Union is the Euro. There is a plethora of benefits that come with a country being part of the European Union. One notable benefit is the ease of travel and work. Citizens which belong to the European Union can travel to other countries in the Union without a visa and even work there.
So what’s all this talk about British Exit? About two years ago, a political group peddled the idea of Britain being an independent nation – free of the European Union.
They marketed that idea to the British population and then ran a vote. 49% of the population voted against a British Exit from the European Union while 51% of Britain voted for it.
For many citizens, Brexit is a nightmare – says Harriet Lawrence, a citizen of England.
But why would anyone want Britain to exit the European Union- losing all the perks that come along with being part of such a powerful union?
Some people say it has to do with patriotism. Britain was once the superpower of the world – having colonised most of the world including the United States and Canada. And many believe that it is this sense of national pride and the idea of being a historical spectacle that drives most of the “yes” voters.
Britain today has very few industries – very few farms and factories. Most of Britain’s industries are professional services and technology companies such as Software Companies. In fact, many people worry that, with a British Exit from the European Union, Britain might suffer an economical collapse.
So, is the British Exit then part pride and part stupidity? Or is there a hidden agenda? Do the political stalwarts have something up their sleeves that us commoners simply can’t see? Only time will tell.
A few years ago, Britain refused to forego its use of its super-powerful Pound Sterling in exchange for the Euro. This too was part of Britain’s national pride. And it’s propably a contributing factor to the subsequent “British Exit” movement.
For two years, the British Exit movement has been at a stalement because new agreements between Britian and the European union can’t yet be finalized. Many countries are calling on Britain to cancel the British Exit Movement, while others, such as France, are saying “if you’re out, you’re out.”
