Brazil Begins COVID-19 Vaccination

It has begun! Brazilians, and the world. can finally breathe again!

These are the sentiments being echoed across the nation of Brazil as the first dose of CoronaVac has been administered today, 17th of January, 2021.

Anvisa, Brazil’s Health and Sanitary Regulatory Body, has approved the emergency use of the Butantan vaccine in Brazil. 10.8 million doses of the vaccine, called CoronaVac, produced by the Butantan Institute of Brazil, has already arrived and prepared for application in the state of Sao Paulo.

A release today (17 Jan) from the government of Sao Paulo has stated that the vaccine is the best weapon against the COVID-19 pandemic. This they said is according to clinical trials which have proven the efficacy of the vaccine. In this context, it was noted that vaccinated persons have 50.4% less chance of contracting the COVID-19 virus, and if they do, 78% of the time they will only have light symptoms and 100% of the time they will not require hospitalization.

First Person Vaccinated in Brazil

A Brazilian nurse of African descent (photographed above) is the first person in Brazil to have received the Butantan vaccine. 54 years old Monica Calazans lives in the state of Sao Paulo and suffers from two medical conditions: diabetes and hypertension. She said she is very happy to be the first person in Brazil to have received the vaccine.

Vaccination is expected to go in full swing across all states of the country of Brazil by Wednesday, 20th of January, 2021.
