As Russia continues to stand in the way of US backed Regime change in Venezuela, US secretary of State Mike Pompeo is heading to a meeting in Finland to try to convince Russian officials to change roles in Venezuela.
Russia’s investements in Venezuela’s oil and gas sector alone stands at more than 17 billion US dollars, and a regime change would run the risk of considerable loss for Russia.
But the Trump administration believes there’s hope: let’s try to strike a deal with Russia. A meeting between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov is scheduled this week. The meeting will take place in Finland and will commence this Tuesday (May 6th, 2019).
If Pompeo is successful in striking a deal with Lavrov and Putin finally sides with the US in supporting regime change in Venezuela, it may very well mean the end of Maduro’s reign. But will that really happen? I guess we’ll know by this weekend.
But even if the US is successful in striking a favorable deal with Russia, it still has a monstrous task ahead: Maduro says his military is prepared to counter any attack.
Time and time again it was proven that the bending of the Venezuelan military’s arm in favor of the opposition is no easy task. Even with millions of people starving and fleeing the country, the soldiers have, to this point, remained loyal to Maduro.
