The situation in Venezuela calls to mind the war to overthrow Gaddafi: a resource – rich country bitterly divided with one side backed by the United States.

While Maduro is the one to directly shoulder the responsibility for the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, it is the US Sanctions which influenced the hyper-inflation of the Venezuelan currency and the ensuing crisis.

A few years back, if you had told someone that this was going to happen to Venezuela, they would have put you in a straight-jacket and taken you straight to the psychiatric ward.

Today, Venezuela has, figuratively speaking, become the “8th wonder of the world.” Venezuelans, a people once full of riches and glory, now sitting on the pavements and sleeping in open air on the sidewalks of Brazil, Columbia and so many other countries, is reminiscent of a phenomenon shrouded in mystery too deep for the human mind.

So where did it all go wrong? The dynamics of international commerce may seem all too complicated for the average person following the news, but here are some speculations as to why the United States so vehemently want Maduro out of power.

  1. The Maduro Regime is a socialist one, and the United States holds a strong anti-socialist policy. As was evident from the failed and bitter Vietnam war, the United States would do everything in its power to eradicate a socialist regime.
  2. Maduro, like his predecessor, Hugo Chavez, holds strong anti-American and anti-zionist sentiments.
  3. Maduro refuses to trade Venezuela’s oil in US dollars. When oil is sold in US dollars, it strengthens the dollar. Some time back, the United States made a deal with Saudi Arabia to offer them military protection if they traded their oil in US dollars. This contributed to the stability and power of the United States dollar against other currencies. If Maduro is removed from power and Jaun Guiado takes over, the US puppet can easily start trading the oil in US dollars.

In summary, the United States want more control over Venezuela’s oil wealth, but the question is, will they get it, and at what cost?
