Over the last few weeks or so, the world has been abuzz with the expression “FIFA World Cup.”
Almost everyone knows what “World Cup” is. It is the football games played by almost every country around the world every four years. This year’s World Cup (2018) is being hosted by Russia.
But what does the “FIFA” stand for in “FIFA World Cup Championships”?
FIFA is an acronym for the expression “Fédération Internationale de Football Association.”
This roughly translates to English, “International Federation of Association Football.”
So what exactly is FIFA and what does it do? FIFA was organized in Paris, France in the year 1904, hence the French name.
FIFA is the giant organization responsible for coordinating and promoting the World Cup Championships every four years. FIFA rakes in billions of dollars in net profit revenues from the global World Cup Games phenomenon every World Cup.
