Israeli anti-missile defense system in Gaza is designed to automatically detect and shoot down rockets fired from Palestine. Since going into operation in 2011, the Iron Dome has shot down over 1200 rockets fired towards Israel. With an estimated 90% success rate, it is the only one of its kind in the world. No other country has been able to replicate the technology.

Efficient and Cost Effective

The estimated cost for the Iron Dome Missile Defense System to shoot down one missile fired towards Israel is US $100,000. However, not only is the Iron Dome Missile Defense System able to detect and shoot down the missile in mid-air, but it is able to determine whether the incoming missile will hit its intended target. If the Iron Dome detects that the incoming missile will miss the protected zone, it won’t fire, thereby saving a $100,000 US dollars fire routine.

US Purchases Two Iron Dome Missile Defense System from Israel

Admitting the inefficacy of the US “Patriot” Missile Defense Technology which was tested in Saudi Arabia, it was reported in August 2019 that the United States has purchased 2 Iron Dome Missile Defense Systems from Israel. These are to be used in defending the United States against rocket, mortar and other missile attacks although it is not yet clear where and when they will be mounted.

The video below shows a clip of the Iron Dome Missile Defense System in action.
