Jail is a terrible thing. No one wants to go there. But how about the homeless and hungry who longs for some kind of shelter and 3 square meals per day? Yes, I’ve heard stories of people committing petty crimes with the sole aim of landing themselves in the lock-ups for a temporary period of time.
When I was a little boy, our neighbor, Dan, the small-time thief, would tell me stories on the front lawn of how he planned to do his next crime so he could go into jail, eat good and put on some size, then come out. And it was easy to observe that those who had spent a few months in jail came out looking fatter than when they went in. Hmm.
In the country of Guyana, South America, there are the stories of the filth and other hardships of prison-life. Most people don’t want to go there. It is only the truly callous who would consider such an option of “spending some time” in Guyana’s jail.
On the flip side of the coin, there are stories of those who serve a few years in prison and come out with training and qualifications that people who are struggling in the “free world” cannot achieve.
But jail under any conditions or circumstances is never a good thing. And no one should endeavor to go there. Make the most of your life in freedom and do the best you can. Stay out of bad company and be the first to walk away from a stand-off. You may look soft today but happy tomorrow.
Up next, I’ll tell you the story of the man who makes Facebook posts from his jail cell in Georgetown, Guyana, South America. And this is a true story!
