Last updated: April 20, 2020 at 13:43 pmVenezuela’s Health Ministry has confirmed with this publication that, as of today, 20th of April, 2020, there has been a recorded total of 256 cases of the coronavirus in Venezuela. Of these, 9 persons have died from coronavirus related complications while 117 persons have recovered, leaving a total of 130 active cases.
If these reports are accurate, it highlights the fact that Venezuela, despite facing one of the worst humanitarian crisis in history, is better at providing healthcare and fighting contagious diseases than most countries including neighboring Guyana and Brazil.
The 9 deaths out of 256 cases of coronavirus show a mere 3.5% mortality rate, while Guyana so far has a 10.7% mortality rate from coronavirus. Meanwhile, Brazil suffered a 6.3% mortality rate from the coronavirus while in the United States 5.3% of the persons who contracted the coronavirus has died as a result of it.
Naturally, mortality rate for a particular country will depend on a variety of factors such as climate, previous conditions of the persons who contracted it and social situations, however, the mortality and recovery rate generally does shed light on the performance of a country’s healthcare system.
On the 15th of March, 2020, Venezuela had reported its first ten cases of the coronavirus and by the 19th of March, 2020 that number had climbed to 42. At that time, China was in the process of sending medical aid to Venezuela.
