Last updated: January 1, 2020 at 21:05 pmAt least nine persons have died as a result of flooding in the capital city of Jakarta, Indonesia as torrential rainfall pounded the capital city and raised flood waters to dangerous levels.
The downpour, accompanied by heavy storms, lightning and thunder, started on the 31st of December 2019 and continued into the morning of the New Year, Jan 1st, 2020.
“This is definitely not a bright start of the New Year for residents of Jakarta Indonesia,” one resident sighed.
A young boy has been electrocuted during the flooding while an elderly couple was drowned in their home. Several persons also died from a landslide triggered by the flood waters, while at least 3 have died from hypothermia.

At least one airport has been shut down in the capital city while the electricity across the entire city has been turned off to prevent electrocution of people in the water.
