Last updated: May 4, 2021 at 22:31 pmInspiring optimism that the Covid-19 vaccination program may already be creating herd immunity in Brazil, Covid 19 infection rates have dropped by over 50% for two consecutive days. Covid-19 related deaths also fell by over 50% yesterday – down from a 7-day average of 2,384 to 983 on May 3rd.
On May, 2, 2021, Brazil recorded 28,935 new Covid cases – down from a 7-day average of 59,160. Then on May, 3rd, 2021, Brazil recorded just 24,619 cases – down from a 7-day average of 58,587.
This is not the first time this year that the infection rate had dropped by more than 50%, but it is the first time it has dropped for two consecutive days. On the 26th of April, 2021, for example, the infection rate fell to 28,636 – down from a 7-day average of 56,333. But on the 27th of April, 2021 it surged right up to 72,140 new cases in one day.
As of today, 4th of March, 2021, over 14 million Brazilians have been fully vaccinated and nearly 30 million have received at least one dose.
Brazil and the world at large is optimistic that the vaccination program will help life return to normal. And with less than 7% of the population fully vaccinated, we’ve seen a two-day consecutive decline for the first time since the start of the pandemic. Although we don’t know what tomorrow holds, we can keep our fingers crossed and pray that the decline continues.
Disclaimer: We could not verify whether it was the vaccine, other factors or a combination of the vaccine and other factors that caused the recent two-day decline in Covid infection rate in Brazil.
