Coronavirus Cuba: 57 Confirmed Cases, 1 Dead

Cuba has sent scores of its highly skilled doctors to help fight coronavirus in the most hard hit countries. But that’s not to say that it is not grappling with the same problem at home. And it is winning the fight amid shortages and tightened US embargo.

At the close of yesterday, March 24, nine new cases were confirmed, raising the total number of coronavirus cases in the Island to 57.

The first of the confirmed cases of coronavirus in Cuba yesterday, 24th March, 2020, is a 48-year-old Cuban citizen who is a resident in the municipality of Mariel, Artemisa province. He arrived in the country on March 12 of this year from Miami, United States of America. He went to his corresponding health center on the 22nd of March with catarrhal symptoms. He was identified as a suspected case and sent to the ¨Luis Díaz Soto¨ Hospital where he remains quarantined and is in stable condition.

In Cuba, 1,479 patients were admitted for clinical-epidemiological surveillance in the quarantine and care centers created for this purpose; of them 116 foreigners and 1363 Cubans. Another 36,526 people are being monitored in their homes, from the Primary Health Care.

The second is 32-year-old Cuban citizen, resident of the Consolación del Sur municipality, Pinar del Río province. She arrived in the country on March 8 of this year, from Mexico. On the 22nd of March, 2020, she went to the health system where she was identified as a suspected case and referred to the ¨León Cuervo Rubio¨ Hospital. She remains in quarantine and is in stable condition.

So far, 738 samples have been tested for COVID-19, of which the 57 cases accumulated so far have been positive.

The third is a 55-year-old Cuban citizen, resident in the Arroyo Naranjo municipality, Havana province. He arrived in the country on March 16 of this year from Ecuador. On the 22nd he went directly to the “Pedro Kourí” Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK) with catarrhal symptoms. He was identified as a suspect and was admitted to the institution. He remains in quarantine and is in stable condition.

So far, there has been only one coronavirus related death on the island – a 61-year-old Italian tourist who had contracted the virus before he arrived.

The fourth is a Colombian citizen, 51 years old, permanent resident in the Arroyo Naranjo municipality, Havana province. She arrived in the country on March 16 of this year from Ecuador. On the 22nd of March, she went directly to the IPK with catarrhal symptoms. She was identified as a suspect, and was admitted to said institution. She remains in quarantine and is in stable condition.

The fifth is a 44-year-old Cuban citizen, resident in the Matanzas municipality, province of the same name. She is the confirmed case whose source of infection was a group of Italians. It started with symptoms on the evening of March 20. On the 21st of March, in the follow-up with her family doctor, she was detected with respiratory symptoms and referred to the “Mario Muñoz Monroy” Hospital, where she was admitted. She remains in quarantine and is in stable condition.

The sixth is a 72-year-old French citizen. He arrived in the country on March 13 of this year from France. He started with symptoms on the 19th. On the 20th he came with respiratory symptoms to the “Arenas Doradas” hotel office. He was identified as a suspicious case and sent to the “Mario Muñoz Monroy” Hospital, where he was admitted. He remains in quarantine and is in stable condition.

The seventh is a 34 years old Croatian citizen. She arrived in the country on March 12 of this year from Germany. She first presented symptoms on the 19th of March. On the 20th of March, she went to the International Clinic of the City of Cienfuegos, after having been identified by the owner of the hostel where she was staying. She was first identified as a suspected case and sent to the “Mario Muñoz Monroy” Hospital, where she was admitted. She remains quarantined in stable condition.

The eight is a 38-year-old French citizen. He arrived in the country on March 9 of this year from Paris, France. He first presented symptoms on the 17th of March. On the 18th of March, he went to the International Clinic of Cayo Coco with respiratory symptoms. He was first identified as a suspected case, but was later admitted to the institution. He moved to the “Octavio de la Concepción y de la Pedraja” Hospital, in the province of Camagüey. He remains in quarantine and is said to be in stable condition.

The ninth is a 78 years old Cuban citizen, a resident of the municipality of Sancti Spíritus, province of the same name. She arrived in the country on March 20 of this year from Madrid, Spain. She first presented symptoms on the evening of March 20. On the 21st of March, during the visit to the family doctor, she was detected with symptoms and sent to the quarantine center at the Faustino Pérez Hospital. She is currently admitted to the Manuel “Piti” Fajardo Hospital, in the Villa Clara province. She remains in quarantine and is in stable condition.

This brings the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Cuba up to 57. Of the 57 patients diagnosed with the disease so far, 54 remain in hospital, of which two are reported in critical condition. Medical teams of specialists in Intensive Care and a Group of Experts from the Ministry of Public Health maintain permanent attention and follow-up.

The 71-year-old Italian patient was admitted to the Fermín Valdés Domínguez Hospital, Holguín, with a history of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. He was initially in critical condition but is now recovering well. The rest of the patients are recovering well.

To date, 169 countries have been reported with COVID-19, 378,041 cases confirmed and 16,365 deaths, for a case fatality of 4.33% (+0.01). The World Health Organization reports 103 countries with transmission. Outside of China, there are a total of 296,293 cases and 15,982 deaths.

In the Region of the Americas 34 countries and 12 overseas territories are affected. There has been 54,313 confirmed cases and 700 deaths.
