On the 14th of February each year, humans, both old and young, wish each other a “happy valentines day.” The day is celebrated as a day for love; and those with romantic partners spend time together, buy gifts for each other, take pictures and do all the romantic things, especially on this day.
It is also customary to dress in red and white to indicate that you are “in love” with someone other than yourself 🙂
Although February 14th is not set aside as a day of rest from work, it is celebrated as though it were a holiday. People prepare for it from weeks in advance. Young men buy presents weeks ahead for their romantic partners, and vice versa. And those not formally in a romantic relationship also make plans for the day, as one girl wrote on Facebook: “I still can’t decide what I’ll buy myself for valentine’s day.” 🙂
But what is the story behind Valentine’s Day? How and where did it originate and what really does it signify?
There are quite a few stories associated with valentine’s day, but the most credible one is that of St. Valentines of Rome, who, before he was executed, wrote a letter to his jailer’s daughter and signed it: “from your Valentine.”
