Brazil Gears Up for Battle With Amazon Fires

On the night of Thursday, 22nd of August, 2019, the President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, signed an order that the Ministers of State take the necessary measures to fight fires in the Amazon:

I urge all Ministers of State to adopt, within the scope of their competences, the necessary measures to survey and combat fire outbreaks in the Legal Amazon region for the preservation and defense of the Amazon Forest, a national heritage site. – Jair Bolsonaro – President of Brazil – August 22nd 2019.

The decision came after a meeting of the President with a group of ministers, in which he also ordered the setting up of a crisis cabinet to monitor and take action to combat the fires.

With the president in this assembly were the heads of the Ministry of Agriculture, the General Secretariat of the Presidency, the Secretariat of Government, the Office of Institutional Security, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Environment and the Civil House.

This Friday (23) there will be a new broader meeting to follow the situation. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment is consolidating data on fire outbreaks for release.

The Amazon rainforest has had several outbreaks of fire for at least 18 days. Last Monday (19) the smoke expelled by the burning reached the capital of the southeast, turning the day into night at 3 pm in the city of Sao Paulo.

On Thursday, 22nd of August, French President Emmanuel Macron suggested on his Twitter that G7 member countries would have an emergency meeting in the coming days to discuss the issue.
