Fighting the Amazon Fires

It is speculated that Brazil has enough aircraft, pilots and manpower to quench the Amazon Forest Fires in a matter of hours. However, as of 22nd of August, 2019, the fires had been raging for nearly 19 days with nothing having been done to fight it.

On the 21st of August, 2019, the Brazilian President, far-right former military leader Jair Bolsonaro, came under heavy criticism for issuing a statement that Non-Governmental Organizations were setting the forest on fire to sabotage his government. The statement triggered a series of international backlash which forced President Bolsonaro to backtract on his words.

As of the 21st of August 2019, there had been absolutely no talks, no actions taken, no worldwide collaboration on fighting the Amazon fires.

On the 21st of August, 2019, a story circulating on Facebook that Russia was sending fire fighting aircraft to Brazil has been debunked as “totally fake.”

On the 22nd of August, 2019, Columbia was the first country to reach out to Brazil to offer help to fight the fires of the Amazon Rain Forest. On the same day, the Brazilian media announced that the Bolsonaro administration will use the Amazon Funds donated by Norway and Germany in 2014 to fight the blazes ravaging the Amazon. This was money donated under a “green” agreement with Brazil for various conservation projects.

In August 2019, after disagreements with the Brazilian right wing leader, Jair Bolsonaro, Norway announced that it will suspend 33.2 million USD of Amazon Funds to Brazil, and Germany had also suspended 39 million USD after Brazil failed to hold up its end of the conservation bargain.

On the 22nd of August, 2019, French President Emmanuel Macron called the Amazon fires an “international crises” and called on G7 countries to meet to discuss the “emergency situation.”

But it has been over 19 days since the fires had been raging, destroying thousands of acres of precious forest and animal lives. Experts agree that the fires have most likely been set intentionally by humans. Who is behind it, and why has nothing been done to curb the spread of the fire within those 19 days?
