Has someone ever said something so positive to you that made you feel so elated that energy surged up in you and you felt you could run 50 miles? And has anyone ever said something negative to you in a way that made you feel so depressed that you could have felt the energy drain from your being? This is the just a glimpse of the power of the mind. In this article, we’ll examine how the “placebo effect” harnesses the power of the mind.

Did you know that the mood-lifting effect of coffee are 90% placebo? You can read more about “The Mood-Lifting Effect of Coffee is 90% Placebo” here, but for now, let’s examine in more details what really the placebo effect is and how it works.

A patient walks into the doctor’s office and complains of feeling unwell. After running some tests, the doctor tells the patient that it’s just a minor condition and that he has the cure. He loads up a syringe and, using standard procedures, injects the medication into the man. He pulls out the syringe and applies a light bandage, throwing the used needle into the specially marked container for disposable syringes.

Just a few seconds later, the patients’ eyes brighten, his voice gets bolder and he says he is already feeling better! The next day, the patient returns to thank the doctor because he’s now feeling 100% better. The doctor smiles and says “you’re welcome!”

But what only the doctor knows is that the contents of that injection was nothing more than water! After examining the patient, the doctor knew that his problem was merely psychological.

The patient had such strong “faith” in modern medicine and the doctor’s diagnosis that it triggered the “power of the mind” once he had received the placebo injection.

He believed the doctor when he said the injection contained the “cure” for his “illness” and so his mind went to work on that belief!

That is the power of the mind and the placebo effect! The mind contains a tremendous amount of power that can positively or negatively affect all areas of our lives, and throughout the centuries, there has been numerous best-selling books written on this subject. The latest best seller on this subject is Australian author Rhonda Byrne’s “The Secret.”

There are also several very successful online websites and courses (such as sarahsprout.com) which teaches humans how to positively harness the power of the mind in creating wealth, happiness and success.

So what’s my take on the whole subject? I personally believe that the mind does contain enormous amounts of power that, when properly harnessned, can positively impact all areas of our lives. However, I also believe that mind-power techniques should be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, a belief in the one true God.
