Soap operas are as old as, or older than I am, and I’m an 80’s child. The oldest running soap opera I knew of a child growing up was called “The Young and the Restless.”
I heard people talk about the characters in that sequel as though they were real life people. That was the early 80’s, and in the third-world country Guyana, South America, in which I grew up, televisions were a scarce and expensive luxury.
Yet, so many people seem well abreast with what was going on in “The Young and the Restless.”
Sometime in the 90’s though, when television had become a bit more common place, a new soap opera was launched. It was called “Days of Our Lives.” And it’s slogan was, “Like Sand Through the Hourglass, so are the days of our lives.”
And how true that is! Aren’t our lives indeed like sand through the hourglass!
The soap opera “Days of our lives” took the soap opera audience by storm. It seemed much more thrilling than what was now considered boring “The Young and the Restless.”
And even as a High School Kid, I remember cuddling up in front of the television with the rest of the crowd to watch the next episode of “Days of Our Lives.”
It was my favorite one, and it quickly became most people’s favorite in my country. Everywhere you went, you heard talks about what might happen next in Days of Our Lives, and what had recently happened.
Indeed, this soap opera series embodied the realities of life: the drama, the ironic twists and the inherent nature of people.
It was cast with skilled actors who did an awesome job, and some of my favorite hollywood stars were found right there.
I can still remember, Kate – Lucas’s mom, whom my grandmother said was “one powerhouse.”
I can remember Lucas – the well groomed rich son of Kate who was wrestling for the model Nicole against the modest and well mannered Eric.
And I can remember Roman who was Eric’s dad.
I must say that this television show entertained and enriched the lives of all who followed it.
Hint: I haven’t watched these soap operas in about 15 years, and I don’t know if they are still running!
