I was having diner with a friend of mine in the city of Primavera de Leste in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil a few weeks ago. After we finished eating, she asked why I had left so much food on the plate. In fact, I had eaten only half the plate of food.

I told her that I usually eat very little. She then asked why I dished out so much food and added that I shouldn’t waste food. And this brings us to an important topic: Is it possible to waste food?

I laughed a little and then I proceeded to explain to my friend that it isn’t possible to waste food! Why? The food returns to the earth from which it came! What I could be wasting though is the labor utilized in preparing the food. But don’t humans waste labor everyday at the gym? Yes, we work out for hours without producing anything and no one complains. That is because the more you work, the stronger and healthier you become and the more energy your body produces. So it isn’t even possible to waste labor!

Further, if I had taken a smaller portion of food, it would have cost less, and less money would be paid to the business, which would in turn result in a poorer circulation of currency – which in turn could result in a staff getting laid off and not being able to buy that toy she wanted to by for her child’s birthday!

The facts is, many ideas peddled by people in the past are not are “words of the wise.” A wise man once said, “the world doesn’t think how you think it works.” What he meant is, “the world doesn’t always work the way it initially appears to.” Sometimes, you have to examine things a little more carefully.
