Many people claim that they “worked hard” for their money. And this is true in many cases. But working hard is a double edged sword – it brings in revenue plus it exercises your body and brain – and that’s a great thing.
But for the reason that they “worked so hard” for their money, many people are tight-fisted – in fact, more than they should be. The bible teaches us to be wise and prudent in our affairs – and this includes money, but it also advises us to “cast our bread upon the waters” and “give a portion to seven and to eight.”
When Jesus walked on earth, He told us that it is “better to give than to receive.” Few people truly understand the power in that statement. To put in human terms, when you give to those who need, you “earn credits” for heavenly rewards. And that makes “giving” better than receiving. Indeed, receiving is a great thing, and we all want that, and that is why most of all we should give.
Today, I read an article on the internet about a collision of two cars in a clustered city. The driver who was in the wrong was angry at the one who caused the accident. I made the following comment:
Driving in Georgetown is not easy. It’s extremely clustered and lawless. Vehicles are always encroaching on each other and you don’t know who will slow down and who wouldn’t. Be nice to one another. Give kindness today because you may need it back tomorrow.
But it was after reading my own comment that something dawned upon me – if you don’t give kindness today you are not entitled to receiving it back tomorrow. Therefore, giving is the power to receive.
I once told a friend of mine – there will come a time when the only thing we have left is what we had given away – and is the time, as the Preacher put it, “when the grinders cease because they are few” and they soul leaves the body.
We’ve all heard the saying, “what you need more of, giving it away.” Yes, give what you can reasonably afford to those who genuinely need it and God will pay it back to you. And at the same time, don’t let your right hand know what your left hand does.
