Today, the sunscreen industry is a billion dollar industry. “Scientists” have been successful in conconvincing the masses that the sun can do serious damage to the skin, even cause cancer…if we’re not careful. So we’re supposed to be more careful of our exposure to the sun.

When questioned about the millions of people who evolved since creation (or evolution) without sunscreen, they came up with a splendid answer: the ozone layer, which protects us from the “harmful rays” of the sun is now almost depleted due to pollution – CO2 emission, etc.

So these modern days, more harmful rays from the sun, sometimes referred to as ultra-violet rays, are able to reach us. So make sure you get your sunscreen! And that’s not all, scientists have been able to convince the masses that, if possible, they should avoid all sunlight between the hottest period of the day – 10 AM to 2 PM. What a rule to live by! A suggestion that has plunged the world further into chaos and even more backward.

I remember when the wonderful VBS (Vacation Bible School) teacher was teaching us when I was about eight years old. She was giving us some science lessons in addition to the usual bible studies. She told us that the hottest period of sunlight is between 10 AM and 2 PM and that, if possible, we should avoid all sunlight between those hours. She was a missionary from the United States and she was quoting from a science magazine.

As Christians, it is extremely dangerous to teach science to our children when it directly contradicts the word of God. When science does not conflict with God’s word, it is OK to teach these “theories” but also make it clear to the students when the “theories” have not yet been factually proven beyond the “shadow” of a doubt.

Doubtlessly, religion, even Christianity, has been hijacked by many cults who add and subtract to God’s word and who tailor the scriptures to suit their own worldy and sometimes evil desires. The bible tells us that “by their fruit we shall know them.” Even so, only God, and not me, will be the One to judge.

Being that my VBS teacher was someone I admired and respected (and still do – she’s a good and God fearing person by the way), I saw her as an authority figure, and my mind at that time was very impressionable. So I “believed” her when she said that it was dangerous to have exposure to the sun during the peak hours.

From that day onwards, I lived my life to avoid sunlight exposure between the hours of 10 AM to 2 PM. I remember one day when my dad was cooking and he asked me to go to the shop to buy an ingredient. I told him I would not like to go because the sun was too hot – just after 10 AM.

My dad was kind enough to excuse me, but he made a sarcastic remark: “he can’t go because the sun is too hot.”

But what does the bible say about all this? “Whoever regards the weather shall neither sow nor reap.” “The lazy man says, I will not go because their is a lion in the street.” “The sluggard will not plow because the of the cold….”

Personally, I think that having lived by this “science” rule had made me less productive and undermined my full potential, but I realized this after many years.

By the age of 30, I was enjoying work daily in temperature that was far hotter than my hometown – during the hottest periods of the day. And after observing the natives of these regions going about their business with no regard for the weather, I realized that I had learned a convenient “untruth” in Bible School.

I’ve sunbathed for hours upon hours without sunscreen in Manaus , Boa Vista, Lethem and Bonfim – some of the hottest places on earth – and it never negatively affected my skin. In fact, I think it has made me stronger and more productive.

Later on, I’ll tell you the story of how the students of St. Ignatius Secondary inspired me with their indifference to the sun and heat, how the people of Manaus work in sunlight 3 times hotter than my hometown, and how, contrary to popular opinion, the sun neither damages your skin nor significantly darkens your complexion. But for now, rest assured that the sun, even without sunscreen, is good for you!
