Over a decade ago, Facebook started off as a simple platform for sharing photos and status updates, playing games and chatting via messenger. But it has moved from there – and far too. Facebook is no longer simply a photo comparison tool or a business platform – it is all of that and much more. It merges a large set up of functionality to become the driving force that it is.

One of the factors that make Facebook so wildly popular is harnessing the humanity qualities of vanity and jealousy. Most humans are jealous and vain by nature – some more than others – and some at a healthy level while others at an unhealthy level. But whatever the level of vanity and jealousy, these two factors drive power into the Facebook business.

Everyone has a point to prove. Everyone wants to prove to their “friends” that they are doing well and being blessed in their daily lives. You would find people taking pictures at fancy restaurants, exotic tourist destinations, wearing fancy clothes, etc. Some would even go as far as flashing a photo of what they are eating. What’s the point of that?

Everyone wants to post something. And those who don’t feel somewhat left out. Facebook then creates a competition among humans which harnesses the natural human tendencies of vanity and jealousy. This in turn makes Facebook the money machine that it is: more competition, more attention, more eyes, more advertising space. Millions of people around the world, without actually being aware of it, converge on Facebook to produce high quality content for Mr. Zukenberg and the Facebook enterprise – taking every care to do a great job and putting great effort into the production – and not caring that they are actually working for free.

In spite of this however, Facebook is a good thing overall. It has been good for business, keeping in touch, education and much more. What can I say then? Keep up the good work!
