In a previous lesson, we learned that a modal verb is a type of helping verb which helps to expression possibility, impossibility or uncertainty. There is a specific modal verb to show regret about past actions of the lack of it.
We often think of the modal verb “should” when giving advice. Example: You should go to school regularly. You should study a new language for at least fifteen minutes every day.
The modal verb should is also used to express regret about the past.
Here are some examples.
I should have studied chemistry instead of biology.
I should not have quit school.
I should have gone to college a long time ago.
To express regret about the past, the modal verb “should” is used with “have” and a past participle.
