goodbye photoIt was 9 AM on Saturday morning. I had already packed my clothes for a fun day at the creek. For some reason, Jessica hadn’t showed up as yet. I wondered what was holding her back.

I was always excited about weekends, especially Saturdays when Jessica and I would go to the creek. There, we would splash in the warm waters under the cool winds in the shade of the leafy trees. The, we would use our hooks to catch fish, roast some and bring some back home.

But what was taking Jessica so long? I looked at the clock. It read 9:30. She was thirty minutes late, and Jessica was never late for anything in her life.

I picked up my phone and was about to dial her number when a car pulled up to my front gate. The horn sounded twice. I walked outside slowly as I approached the vehicle. I saw Jessica’s brother coming towards me.

“Rosemary,” he called out hurriedly. “Get ready quickly. We’re going to the airport!”

Needless to say, I was speechless, shocked and confused.

It took some time for Jessica’s brother to explain what was going on. He told me that their entire family was leaving for England that day. He said it was an unexpected move and that their parents had kept it a secret for a month.

I couldn’t believe my ears. I ran back quickly and changed my clothes. Then, we drove to the airport. As we drove into the parking lot, I saw Jessica running towards me. We hugged each other as tears flowed down our faces. We said our final words of goodbye, although we didn’t know what to say.

Then, the announcer’s voice came over the P.A system.

“Last call for passengers boarding Flight R72 to London.”

As I watched Jessica and her family climb aboard the plane, I realized that the was a day I would never forget.
