Modal verbs are a type of helping verbs that help to express possibility, impossibility, certainty or uncertainty.

Here are some examples:

I don’t think I “can do” that.

I think I “can open” the door.

He “might have visited” his friends last year.

He “may have gone” to the beach.

You “must have offended” him.

You “should attend” university.
