Some of my private students of CXC English were given an assignment to write a short story entitled, “The Day I Went Fishing.”

The title “The Day I Went Fishing” is a bit peculiar because the word “the” in the title of the story implies that the narrator only went fishing for one day in his or her entire life! It is unlikely, but not impossible, that someone would have gone fishing for only day in their entire life!

On the other hand, the word “the” could imply that there was something extraordinary about that day of which the story is told even though the narrator went and would continue to go fishing on numerous other occasions.

We put our heads and pens together and here is what we wrote.

The Day I Went Fishing

At 8 O’clock in the morning we set out fishing trip. The sun had just started casting its golden rays of warmth from above the mountaintops. We were headed to the Takutu River.

We were fully equipped with our hooks, knives, cutlasses, bags and bait of course. We didn’t forget our snacks along with drinks in our icebucket. We knew it was going to be a long day and we were sure to get hungry.

The plan was to fill our buckets with fish and return home to surprise our parents with the worderful catch. They will be so proud of us after they see how many fishes we caught! Then, after we cooked the fishes and give them to eat, they will be so happy!

The cool wind brushed my face as I walked through the bushes. It was indeed a beautiful day.

Suddenly, I heard a frightening noise. It was a loud, gurgling sound coming from behind me. I spun around. But it was only Chad singing his favorite son, “Lonely Road.” “Chad, stop it!” I shouted. “We don’t want the rain to fall.”

We continued onwards. Soon we reached the river bank. Devon pulled out his net and got it ready. Delon started to bait his hook. Suddenly, we saw a huge fish moving under the water. Our eyes bulged with excitement. “This is a big fish. If we catch this one, we won’t have to catch anymore for the day!” I exclaimed.

“Yes, yes! Get it!” shouted Floyd.

“I got this!” shouted Dexter as he grabbed the hook from Delon and threw into the water. But the fish did not bite. It just kept swimming back and forth under the water as though it were teasing us.

Devon got the net ready. With careful aim he flung it into the water towards the fish. But with one swift movement, the fish swam to the other side.

We started to get frustrated.

“I’m going in!” shouted Floyd as he started to take off his shirt and pants.

Floyd waded into the water and plunged towards the creature. Just then, the creature raised itself out of the water and we were horrified to come face to face, for the first time in our lives, with the mermaid!

As we all froze in our tracks, our eyes wide with terror, the mermaid started to speak, “Floyd, come here. Stay with me. Don’t go back. You are so handsome….”

At that moment, we forgot our hooks, nets, drinks and food and we bolted from the river like Usain Bolt in the Olympics 100 meters dash.
