If you try to copy someone’s signature, a handwriting expert can examine it and determine that the signature does not belong to the person to whom it is attributed. Copying someone’s signature without their permission, especially for the purpose of defrauding, is called “forging” the signature. Have you ever forged a signature? Don’t try because this can land you in some serious hot water!
Just as a signature is unique to each person, a spoken accent is unique to a particular geographical region. An accent is like a geographical signature. Canadians, for an example, have a unique accent to Americans or Brits. Further, accents vary from state to state, region to region, and sometimes even city to city.
If you try to learn a second language, that is, a language other than your mother tongue, no matter how hard you try, you will still sound like a foreigner. You will have the English accent when speaking that language. That’s because there are so many “intricate details” about the way vowels, consonants, and letter combinations are pronounced in a foreign language as compared to your native language and how you are used to pronouncing them. It may take years, perhaps decades before you speak with a native accent in the second language you have learned.
Here is an example. The Portuguese word for “yes” is “sim.” But it is not pronounced the way English people would be tempted to pronounce it. It is pronounced “seeng,” and the pronunciation is also “nasalized.” Learn more.
People of the Caribbean speak with a different accent to Americans, Brits, or Canadians. They have what is called the “Caribbean accent.” But at the same time, someone from the country of Trinidad would speak with a different accent to someone from Guyana, Jamaica, or Barbados. Almost every Caribbean country has an accent all of its own. Further, people from different towns, cities, and districts within that country might have an accent all of their own. In Guyana, for example, people from the countryside speak with a different accent to those of the capital city.
An accent therefore, is like a geographical signature. It helps to stamp you as a person from a particular region or heritage in the mind of the listener. So what is your accent? And how does it help to identify you?
