You may have heard that there are four types or kinds of sentences, but there are actually eight. That is because sentences are classified in two ways:
- By structure: simple, compound, complex, compound-complex.
- By purpose: declarative, interrogative, exclamatory, imperative.
On this page, we’ll look at the first type of sentence by structure: the simple sentence.
The simple sentence, needless to say, is the “simplest type” of sentence. It is made up of just one subject and one predicate. Here’s an example:
Guyana is a small country.
Subject= what we talk about. (Guyana)
Predicate = what we say about the subject. (is a small country)
The sentence above is an example of the simple sentence. But did you know that there are FOUR PATTERNS of the simple sentence?
Simple Subject + Simple Predicate = Simple Sentence
Simple Subject + Compound Predicate = Simple Sentence
Compound Subject + Simple Predicate = Simple Sentence
Compound Subject + Compound Predicate = Simple Sentence
