Do you need to capitalize the first letter of the name of a school subject? The answer is “yes” and “no.” Or should I say “no” and “yes”?

Most of the time you do NOT CAPITALIZE the First Letter of the name of a school subject. There are only three times when you need to CAPITALIZE the First Letter of the name of a school subject, as follows:

1. When it begins a sentence.

2. When it is the name of a nationality, example: French, Portuguese, English.

3. When the shortened abbreviated form is used, example: IT for information technology.

Bearing those rules in mind, here is an example done for you.

The Caribbean Examination Council offers suitable qualifications options to candidates of varying backgrounds. Subjects offered include: mathematics, English, geography, French, Portuguese, home economics, chemistry, biology and social studies.
