Perhaps at some point in your life, you heard a story, or someone told you something, and they added, “I heard that from the horse’s mouth.” “From the horse’s mouth” is an idiomatic expression meaning “from the person himself.” For example, “Troy is going to the USA next week…I heard it from the horse’s mouth.” That means that Troy himself told me he’s going to the USA next week, not some third party.
In a court of a law, word coming directly from the defendant or accused in a crime carries more weight. An accused person may have someone say, “this person harmed me.” It would then have to be tried in court to prove guilt or innocence. But if the accused himself says, “I committed the crime.” Then the case is over because those words came “from the horse’s mouth.”
In the bible, we are told that for centuries God spoke through us through prophets, but when Jesus arrived, He spoke to us through His Son. The Son, being a direct impersonation of the Father, is most qualified to instruct, command, and teach us. That is why you might find Jesus’ words much stronger than the words of Moses and the other prophets, and His righteousness more exalted.
A lot of people don’t like to hear the words of Jesus. Even in churches, the words of Jesus are sometimes skimmed over or skipped for long periods of time. Jesus’ words can be challenging. They can be frightening because He commands us to do what is hard for us to do.
Jesus made it clear: not all who says “Lord Lord” will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but those who do the will of My Father. And Jesus made it clear what the Will of the Father is:
Give to the poor, turn the other cheek, go the extra mile, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and give shelter to those without homes.
A lot of people don’t like to hear the words of Jesus, because they are fearful words. But Jesus set before us a blessing and a curse. Those who hear My words and obey them will be like a man who built his house on the rock; those who hear and don’t like those who build their house on the sand.
One treasure in heaven is worth more than all the gold, silver, diamond, and money in the world. Store your treasures up in heaven, because where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
