In the bible, we learn that “life and death lies in the power of the tongue.” In the old testament, God instructs His people to bless others by saying “The Lord bless and keep you.”
The nation of Israel was founded in God’s sanctified blessing to Jacob through his father Isaac.
The bible also tells us that “the prayer of a righteous man avails much.” But the question is, “how much?”
Jonah was a righteous man. So righteous in fact that God called him on a special mission: to save the people of Nineveh. But Jonah hated of people of Nineveh! So much so that he ran in the opposite direction! But when God finally forced him to go, all he shouted in the city was “God will destroy this city!”
What a curse! The bible tells us that the prayers of a righteous man avails much, and that the power of life and death lies in the tongue!
But as David supplicated God, “let him curse, but you bless O Lord!”
We learn that the blessing or curse must be approved by God – He alone has the power to bless or to curse.
Later, God saves the city of Nineveh, and He teaches Jonah a lesson when He caused the tree under which Jonah took shelter to wither. Jonah was so affected by the heat that he said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”
But in this, God brings Jonah to repentance and teaches him to learn to respect His creation!
In the same say way, when you are a child of God, God will “burn” those who curse you and bring them to repentance. Remember, He has said, “I will bless those who bless you, and curse those who curse you.”
The bible also tells us that “whom God has blessed, let know man curse!” In other words, they may curse, but to no avail!
How beautiful is our God then, in all the earth! As David says, “let all the earth sing praises to Him!”
