Before we go further into customizing our WordPress Website, let’s stop to talk about WordPress Plugins.

WordPress Plugins will be essential during the customizing of our new WordPress template or website. We’ll have to install certain plugins to get certain jobs done.

But what exactly is a WordPress Plugin? A WordPress plugin is simply a piece of well-written code that carries out certain functions on a wordpress site. This code, when installed “plugs in” to your WordPress website and does its job.

Here are some examples.

  1. Add to Any Share Buttons – This plugin allows you to add a wide variety of social sharing buttons at the top or bottom of your pages or posts with a few simple configurations.

Here’s a screenshot of a page which uses Add to Any Share Buttons.

That’s the homepage of my website. And those beautiful social sharing buttons were added there automatically after I installed and configured Add to Any Share Buttons.

ImageInject – This is truly a priceless and invaluable plugin for most bloggers. It allows you to search the internet for free open source images for your articles, and then add them anywhere on your page – all with a few simple clicks. I write a lot of articles, and I use this beautiful plugin to find relevant filler photos like the one in the screenshot below.

The ImageInject Plugin helped me to find this amazing dreamy photo for my vocabulary article “What are Your Dreams,” in my blog about English Language and grammar, seen here: www.patrickcarpen.com/english

Revision Control – The Revision Control Plugin allows you to limit the number of stored revisions WordPress saves for each page or post. That is because each time you edit a page or post on WordPress, it saves the revision. This could take up a lot of space and clog your site to a throttle.

The Revision Control Plugin allows you to set the number of latest revisions stored to just 3, 2 or any number you choose.

There are literally thousands of WordPress Plugins that allow you to do just about any job imaginable. There are some great plugins that, when installed, allows you to add an Image Slider to you website, and we’ll be searching for the right one of these.

We’ll be exploring these and other great plugins in the coming tutorials. So see you in the next lesson: WordPress Plugins: Part 2
