Demerara is one of one Guyana’s three counties. It is also the smallest of the three counties. Demerara is home to the Capital City of Guyana, which is called Georgetown.
Demerara is Guyana’s smallest but most important county. It is important because the capital city and chief port Georgetown is located there.
Demerara is separated from Berbice by the Abary River. One historical landmark in the county of Demerara is the Stabroek Market. The Stabroek Market is built entirely of cast iron and extends into the Demerara River. It was built by the Dutch who opened it to the public in the year 1881.
Today, many people own businesses in the Stabroek market. They sell every thing from fish to electronic items.
