The British brought Africans to work as slaves in the sugar plantations of Guyana, but slavery was abolished and this forced the British to search for cheap labor elsewhere. They found their source in India. East Indian men were able to endure the hard work of the sugar plantations, especially cane cutting. The British dubbed the East Indian indentured laborers “coolies.”
