Who Created God?

People often ask, “how did God come about?” and “who made God?” That question is as perplexing as it is interesting. Indeed, the study of religion is one that never ceases to baffle man.

We can respond that God “always existed” and that “time does not exist” with God. Or, as the gospel song goes, God was reigning “before time began.” And then God, “when” he created humans, cut a slice of the pie of eternity and gave it to us humans. Thus time might be seen as a tool given to man to which God is not limited.

Nevertheless, the idea of eternity is difficult, if not impossible, for the human mind to comprehend. This is because humans are finite, and for humans, everything has a beginning and an end. And that’s perhaps, one of the factors that distinguishes God from man: we are finite; He is infinite.

I once asked a Muslim scholar, “so if God ‘always’ existed, what was He doing before He created the earth?”

He responded, “we don’t know, put perhaps He had other creations, and things which we cannot even imagine.” Indeed, what God did with His “time” before us is little of our business!

But here’s another question. Who created God? We can say that God was not created since He always existed. And as baffling as the idea of “always existed” is to our finite minds, we are forced to accept it at face value.

Indeed, it is difficult for the human mind to believe that something that exists does not have a creator. Evolutionists and atheists are always at conflict with believers over the idea that something that exists must have been created by someone or something. And this in itself leads the believer to a point of contradiction.

To illustrate this point, I’ll tell you a little story. A Christian and an atheist lived in the same house. They always argued about God, creation and evolution. One day, the Christian went into the atheist’s lab and created a simulation of the solar system. It was so beautifully done that when the atheist arrived and saw it, he was awestruck. He said, “who designed this beautiful model?”

The Christian said to him, “well, there was a little tremor at the house today and all the balls were rolling about and then, eventually, they fell into place like that.

The atheist looked at the Christian and said, “don’t be ridiculous! That’s impossible!”

The Christian replied, “well why are you being ridiculous with your Big Bang Theory – that all the stars, planets and satellites fell into place by themselves after a massive explosion?”

Indeed, the atheist was left at a lost. But the Christian was left with another struggle. If everything has a creator, then so should God?
