Sometime around January, 2021, I developed something which may be classified as sleep apnea. However, as usual, I did not go to the doctor to get an official diagnosis. Being a strong believer in holistic health and alternative medicines, I decided to try to find nature’s cure. After all, as the saying goes, “for every illness, there is a plant that cures it.”

I’m not sure what exactly was causing me to have sleep apnea, because, as I said, I did not go for a professional diagnosis. Further, I cannot say for sure what type of sleep apnea it was, whether central, obstructive or complex. What I know is that my breath was cutting off as I was starting to fall asleep and there was some sort of excessive fluid being produced in my stomach that was contributing to it.

For the last six months or so, I had been feeling a weird sensation in the chest, like a tightening, but painless sensation. Since 2019, I had been in the habit of doing pushups every morning. And by early 2021, I was averaging a total of 140 pushups every morning upon waking up. I did these before eating anything. I figured that the tightness of the chest could have been a result of muscles developing. I could now do the wink tricks with my chest muscles.

I knew that people with congestive heart failure suffer from sleep apnea, so I did some research on congestive heart failure and deduced that I was not suffering from that since I did not have enough of the defined symptoms. Further, I was having fluid accumulations in the stomach, not lungs.

The accumulation of fluids in the stomach caused me cough and make frequent trips to the bathroom sink during the nights. This in turn caused me several sleepless nights. Further, I found that when I was falling asleep, it was the fluid that was rushing upwards to my throat and blocking the airways. I would wake up gasping for breath, or struggling to catch my breath.

I figured that my body was perhaps lacking certain nutrients or suffering from some sort of chemical imbalance. So I decided to address the problem nature’s way. At that time, the mangoes season had just set in and there were a few green mangoes on the trees. I peeled about six of them and ate them with pepper and salt. My stomach felt better and the fluid accumulations eased slightly, but not enough to give me any significant relief during the night. I repeated this for a second day, but it did not seem to solve the problem.

The following night, I could not sleep at all. At that point I decided to suspend my pushup routine. It was possible that my problem was physiological. That is, it could have been brought on by physical changes in my body. Perhaps the constant pushup routine that I had embarked on was not only building external muscles, but internal muscles, and this in turn might be narrowing my air passages somewhere along the line.

I make an analogy with the hardware and software aspects of a computer. A problem where a part of my body was physically obstructing the airways can be compared to a hardware problem, and a problem where lack of nutrients or chemical imbalances were causing excessive fluid secretions can be compared to a software problem. More than likely, I had a “software problem.”

So, here is the remedy I created to cure myself from this condition.

1 apple

1 tomato

1 cucumber

1 slice of papaw

1 slice of muskmelon

1 handful of grapes

1 pint of milk

Blend all together to make a juice strong in nutrients that can correct many bodily problems. I also added 2 spoons of honey and 6 spoons of sugar as I like my juices sweet. I don’t have any diabetic tendencies, but if you do, you should watch your sugar.

I drank this for breakfast and lunch for two days. I slept like a baby for the last two nights. The condition is not fully cured, but I’m confident it’s going away.

Update: I also suspended coffee drinking and moved away from certain stressful conditions which seemed to have been exacerbating the problem.
