The imperative sentence gives a command. In most cases, the subject of the imperative sentence (you) is left out of the sentence but understood.

The following paragraph, entitled, “Driving An Automatic Transmission Car,” gives good examples of the imperative sentence in action. All of the sentences in the paragraph (except the heading) are imperative sentences.

Driving An Automatic Transmission Car

First, walk around the car to make sure there are no obstacles in your way. Glance under the car and near to the wheels to make sure it is clear of animals and children. Insert the car key into the keyhole on the door. Turn the key in the anticlockwise direction to unlock the door. Now remove the key and open the door. Get into the driver’s seat. Close the door. Fasten your seat belt. Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn lightly in the clockwise direction until the dashboard lights are turned on. Place your right foot on the brake. Press the brake. Make sure you can see comfortably into your rear view and side mirrors. If necessary, adjust the mirrors so you can see clearly behind the vehicle. With your right foot pressing the brake, turn the key further clockwise until the engine starts. Release the key. Put both hands on the steering wheel in the 10 to 2 position. Look in front of you to make sure the path is clear. Glance into your rear view and side mirrors to make sure your back and sides are clear. Release the hand brake of the car if necessary. Shift the automatic transmission gearshift into the drive position. Lift your right foot slowly off the brake and watch the car start to move slowly forward. Place your right foot lightly on the accelerator and watch the car increase in momentum. Use the steering wheel to turn the car left or right. To stop the car, lift your foot off the accelerator and gradually press the brake. When the car has stopped, shift the gearshift into the park position. Apply the hand brake. Turn the key anticlockwise to turn off the engine. Turn it further to shut off the electricity. Make sure your headlights are turned off. Pull the key out of the ignition switch. Unfasten your seat belt. Open the door and get out of the car. Lock the door.
