Last updated: February 19, 2021 at 12:30 pmIn an earlier article, we talked about forming the compound sentence using the conjunction “but.” In this article, we will look at forming the compound sentence using the conjunction “and.” Note that a compound sentence is two simple sentences fused with a coordinating conjunction. The seven coordinating conjunctions are: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so (FANBOYS). Also note that at other times, simple sentences may be joined with conjunctive adverbs to form the compound sentence.
The coordinating conjunction “and” is used for joining similar ideas such as agreement and addition. Here is an example.
Simple Sentences:
- The country is beautiful.
- The people are friendly.
The two simple sentences above express similar or agreeable ideas, so we can join them with the coordinating conjunction “and.”
Compound Sentence: The country is beautiful, and the people are friendly.
When joining two simple sentences to form a compound sentence, the two simple sentences are transformed into two independent clauses and are fused together with a coordinating conjunction. Remember to put a comma right after the first clause.
Here is an another example.
- The teachers are well trained.
- The environment is conducive to learning.
Compound Sentence: The teachers are well trained, and the environment is conducive to learning.
