Just having an “essential” vocabulary might make it possible for you to express yourself in Spanish to a limited extent. And knowing the “common expressions” might help you carry on a limited conversation.
But where do you go from there? That simply isn’t enough! You need more words in your vocabulary! You need to be able to express yourself more and more. And eventually, you need to be able to express yourself just as you would in your native language! Hence the need for “supplementary vocabulary” in Spanish.
