Alice in Wonderland is one of the most beautiful, enchanting and enthralling children’s books I have read in my entire life. And needless to say, I’ve read a lot of books!
But for me, this book also holds sentimental value. Just the thought of this book conjures fond memories of my childhood days at my aunt’s house at Port Mourant, Guyana. And I can still remember my beautiful aunt there sitting at the backyard on a stool overlooking us while we ran around and played games. It was there at my aunt’s house where I found this book, and read it.
From the very opening, the book gripped me, and held me in a trance untill the very end. From the first page, I was wondering where the talking rabbit came from, and what is that hole that Alice jumped into, and where they all were going anyway….
And I could never have guessed the answer until I finished the whole book! And no! I won’t take the magic away! I’ll let you savor it too. So I won’t explain the plot.
The children’s book, Alice in Wonderland, is a magical book that every child should read. Even though the book is about 100 years old, it is one of those books that I would think unwise to rewrite. I think Alice in Wonderland is best read in its original text with all its spices and flavors fully intact. In fact, I think if I adapt, rewrite or shorten this book, I would do a lousy job compared to the original version.
So, I’d like to hand over to you here, in the fullness of all its glory, ALICE IN WONDERLAND!
