Are snakes afraid of me, or is this yet another sign of divine protection? For the 35 days that I was there, no snakes appeared near to the Eco Lodge.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In a remote rainforest Lodge, dangerous snakes sometimes wander out of the rainforest near to the Lodge, and sometimes dangerously close. But the indigenous peoples of our hinterland have a special talent for interacting with elements of nature, even the dangerous elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the 35 days that I stayed at Atta Rainforest Lodge in 2025, no snakes appeared near to the Lodge. The staff there were confused. They told me snakes usually came around but they didn’t come at all during the period I was there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day I left, I took the chef’s phone number and told her I’ll keep in touch by WhatsApp because I wanted to know if the snakes came around after I was gone. “Maybe the snakes are afraid of me,” I chuckled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Saturday 10th of January, just six days after I left, Calista sent me this video of a venemous labaria snake which came by one of the cabins…perhaps a little too close. She told me that they didn’t kill it. They put it back into the rainforest, its natural habitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The indigenous peoples may be skilled in navigating the wild but mishaps do happen sometimes. Indigenous people do get bitten by snakes sometimes. They survive sometimes, but at other times it’s fatal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding these stories makes us more aware of the respect and appreciation we should have for everyone who live and work in remote, forested areas, especially tour operators who carve out a guarded path for us to explore. They are the guardians of our rainforests and the keepers of the wild.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
