According to prophecies in the old testament books of the bible, and according to\u00a0Jewish expectations, the Messiah promised by God to deliver His people and establish His kingdom forever was supposed to be a direct descendant of God’s servant, David.<\/p>\n

But how could Jesus be a son of David according to the flesh\u00a0<\/em>if He was conceived of a virgin who had known no man up to the time of the Holy Birth?<\/p>\n

Joseph was a direct descendant of David, but Jesus is not the son of Joseph since Jesus\u00a0is the Son of God.<\/p>\n

When Joseph learned that Mary was pregnant, he flew in anger<\/em> and sought to put her away secretly, thinking that she had cheated on him and got pregnant. But an angel of the Lord came to Joseph and spoke to him in a dream, instructing him to marry Mary soon after.<\/p>\n

The scriptures tell us that when a man marries a woman, he cleaves unto his wife, and the two become one flesh<\/em>. Since Mary and Joseph became “one flesh” before the birth of Jesus, Jesus was also a son of Joseph “according to the flesh”. Nevertheless, Jesus\u00a0is\u00a0not biologically Joseph’s son, since He retains the title of the Unblemished Lamb and the Son of the Most High God.<\/p>\n

Since the son of any man is not qualified to pay the cost of sin and redeem mankind, Jesus was to be born free of original sin and could not have been the son of any\u00a0man. Nevertheless, God worked out a marvelous plan of fulfilling the scriptures which\u00a0promised that the Messiah would be a son of David “according to the flesh”.<\/p>\n
