{"id":118,"date":"2018-10-04T14:53:53","date_gmt":"2018-10-04T14:53:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/patrickcarpen.com\/learning-portuguese\/?page_id=118"},"modified":"2021-03-26T21:11:56","modified_gmt":"2021-03-26T21:11:56","slug":"youre-the-man","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/patrickcarpen.com\/learning-portuguese\/youre-the-man\/","title":{"rendered":"You&#8217;re the Man!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Photo by TheDigitalArtist\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/patrickcarpen.com\/learning-portuguese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2018\/10\/ee35b7072df31c3e81584d04ee44408be272e1dd1fb7154697f4_640_wow.jpg?w=678&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"wow photo\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First Published: 4th of October, 2018 by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patrickcarpen.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Patrick Carpen<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last updated: March 26, 2021 at 21:11 pm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patrickcarpen.com\/english\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">English <\/a>tradition, the exclamatory expression, &#8220;You the Man!&#8221; is a compliment paid to a male person signifying that he has accomplished something great or is exceptionally skilled in some area or something of that sort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, when my American friend, Bob Delese, saw a picture of my girlfriend and I vacationing in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tourbrazilnow.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brazil<\/a>, he commented, &#8220;OK, Patrick, You&#8217;re the man.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expression &#8220;you&#8217;re the man,&#8221; may be contracted in some dialects as &#8220;you da man,&#8221; or something similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But does Portuguese have a matching expression for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patrickcarpen.com\/english\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">English <\/a>&#8220;you&#8217;re the man&#8221;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is: voce e o cara!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">voce = you<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">e = are<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">o = the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">cara = boy, young man, dude, guy, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The literal translation for the word &#8220;man&#8221; in Portuguese is &#8220;homen.&#8221; But as you can guess, the expression, &#8220;you&#8217;re the man&#8221; is a figure of speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Portuguese, the word &#8220;cara&#8221; is a slang or figurative expression for man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some time back, I was explaining the English Language course I had created to a Portuguese native. At first, he was a bit confused as to how it worked. But after I explained it to him, he exclaimed, his eyes wide with amazement, &#8220;voce e o cara!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So then, English: you&#8217;re the man!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Portuguese: voce e o cara!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, what&#8217;s the Spanish equivalent for the &#8220;you&#8217;re the man&#8221;?
