Understanding Portuguese phonetics is a key element in speaking the language correctly.

Here’s one of the many stumbling blocks: In English, we pronounce “ti” as “tee” or “tAY,” but in Portuguese, it’s almost always pronounced “chee.”

Here are some examples:

Pet – Estimação (es-chee-ma-sow)

Skeptical – Cético (seh-chee-coh)

Had – Tinha (cheen-yah)

Native – Nativo (na-chee-vo)

Continues – Continua (con-chee-noo-a)

Motive – Motivo (moh-chee-voh)
