During the flag raising ceremony, the British <em>Union Jack<\/em> flag is lowered and the Guyanese <em>Golden Arrowhead<\/em> Flag is hoisted as a symbolic declaration of Independence from British Rule.<\/p>\n<p>Guyana was colonized by the Dutch, French and finally the British who ruled Guyana until the 26th of May, 1966: the day in which Guyana was officially declared an independent nation and no longer a British Colony.<\/p>\n<p>A group of Guyanese politicians, including Dr. Cheddi Jagan and Forbes Burnham were instrumental in the &#8220;fight&#8221; for independence from the British Crown.<\/p>\n<p>The fight for independence saw many violent insurrections such as the burning down of cane fields and other acts of sabotage and resistance against the British Empire.<\/p>\n<p>But whether the gaining of independence on the 26th of May, 1966 was a good thing or not has always been, and still is, a matter of debate and personal taste.<\/p>\n<p>I will be discussing the issue of whether winning independence was really a good thing in some of my commentaries.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to sign up to my newsletter in the top right hand column above to get notified whenever I publish something new on my blog about Guyana.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Independence Day is celebrated every year on the 26th of May by the Guyanese people to mark Guyana&#8217;s independence from the British Crown.
