Sometime back, I was browsing around Facebook when a video appeared on my news feed. It was a video about a pretty little invention or contraption that would \u201csave the world a lot of water\u201d. If you don\u2019t laugh out loud<\/em> at this moment, then you probably aren\u2019t at my level of intelligence. But I\u2019ll forgive you: most people aren\u2019t.<\/p>\n

For those of you who are not familiar with the water cycle, let me put it in simplified terms for you. The water on the earth\u2019s surface is changed into water vapor by the action of the sun\u2019s heat. The water vapor, because it is lighter than air, rises to higher regions of the atmosphere; in other words, into the clouds. The fact is, clouds are really a form of water preparing to return to the earth as rain. After the water vapor reaches a point high above the earth where it becomes cool enough, it \u201ccondenses\u201d and falls as rain.<\/p>\n

The white clouds are water vapor which had just ascended to the upper strata of the earth\u2019s atmosphere. The darker clouds have been there for a longer time and are closer to being converted back into liquid water.
\nThe sun\u2019s heat vaporizes water from every aspect of the earth\u2019s surface: the oceans, the seas, the rivers, the puddles on the road, the damp sands, the trees, the house tops, drains, cracks, crevices\u2026the list goes on.<\/p>\n

The water cycle reminds me of the law of the conservation of mass and energy<\/em>, which states that \u201cmatter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed (by man) but changes from one form to another\u201d. In the same way, \u201cwater\u201d can neither be created nor destroyed, but changes from one form to the other.<\/p>\n

Then why do people use the expression \u201csave water\u201d? The simple answer: they\u2019re stupid. I remember when I was about eight years old, or ever since I was a kid, I would see a big sign on a huge water storage facility that reads \u201cWater is Life: Save It\u201d. And up to this day, I wonder what that means! That was a message from the \u201cGuyana Water Authority\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

Imagine, the company whose business is to sell water to the entire population telling the population to use less of it. It just doesn\u2019t get any better. Unlike Pringles and Coca Cola, these guys are not after your money! Or are they? You can\u2019t complain that they\u2019re trying to rip you off, or could you? By the way, I should mention that back in the days, you had to join a line for about one hour to get a jar of water in some places. And then the water would be so saturated with red particles (about 25 percent) which you saw when it settled the next day, that you would wonder if it\u2019s a \u201crun off\u201d of the Pharaoh\u2019s plague.<\/p>\n

But let\u2019s not complain too much, it\u2019s all part of the development of a country. And before you could get to point B, you must first be at point A.
\nSo the water was not so good, and they were selling. All fine and dandy. And they were advising you not to waste it: whatever the hell that means.
\nMaybe some days, some of the Guyana Water Authority\u2019s workers came in so exhausted and collapsed to the floor that they had to call an ambulance. After reviving them they asked \u201cwhat happened?\u201d Then the workers related how hard they struggled to dig the last water well so that the people could have water. After that they collapsed again. So now they have to appeal to the masses to save water by putting up a big sign that says \u201cwater is life: save it\u201d.<\/p>\n

But I still don\u2019t understand what that means. How about \u201cWater is Life: Help us Dig Some Wells\u201d.<\/p>\n
