Oh Susanna, the children’s song I used to listen to as a child in the 80s is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. It could possibly be classified as a nursery rhyme. Over 30 years later, I can still remember the tune.

I learned to sing the song myself and would sometimes sing it to my English students in Brazil to their absolute delight.

The song being so old, I tried with little success to research the lyrics online, but no one source produced the lyrics as my strong memory recollected to be. Nevertheless, I used various sources together with my memory, put two and two together, and recomposed the song to the best of my abilities – perhaps slightly tilted to personal taste.

Oh Susanna – Lyrics

Oh Susanna, Oh Don’t you cry for me….
I’ve come from Alabama with a banjo on me knee
I’m going to Luisanna, my true love for see.

It rained all night the day I left
The weather it was dry.
The sun so hot, I froze to death
Susanna don’t you cry!

Oh Susanna, Oh don’t you cry for me
I’ve come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee
I’m going to Luisana, my true love for to see.

I had a dream the other night
When everything was still
I thought I saw Susanna
Coming down the hill

A buckwheat cake was in her mouth
A tear was in her eye
I said, “I come from Dixie Land;
Susanna don’t you cry.”

Oh Susanna, Oh Don’t you cry for me….
I’ve come from Alabama with a banjo on me knee
I’m going to Luisanna, my true love for see.

Oh Susanna
Oh don’t you cry for me.
For I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee
