Have you ever heard the expression \u201csitting duck\u201d and wondered what \nthat means? Or have you ever heard someone or something being referred \nto as a \u201csitting duck\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the meaning of the expression \u201csitting duck\u201d and where does the expression find its root?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The expression \u201csitting duck\u201d is a metaphor <\/a>for someone or something that is vulnerable to attack or impending danger. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The expression perhaps has its roots in the duck-hunting culture. Imagine a duck sitting placidly in the waters of a lake, trench or pond, oblivious to the aim of the encroaching hunter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For duck hunters, a sitting duck is much easier to shoot and kill than a duck that is walking or flying. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sitting <\/em>duck then is a target with no defense or security \nfrom attack. We might say that a country without a capable military is a\n sitting duck for potential invaders. Someone who walks home late at \nnight without protective measures, especially in a dangerous locality, \nmight be referred to as a \u201csitting duck\u201d for robbers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
