Here&#8217;s an example:<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Perry, a university professor, will be talking to us about wildlife conservation.<\/p>\n<p>The words &#8220;a university professor&#8221; are said to be <em>in apposition to<\/em> the subject &#8220;Mr. Perry&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>A word team in apposition to a noun or pronoun is called an &#8220;apposition&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>You mark off an apposition with <a href=\"http:\/\/patrickcarpen.com\/english\/grammar-punctuation-and-mechanics\/the-comma-keeping-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commas.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are some more examples:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/patrickcarpen.com\/guyana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guyana<\/a>, <em>the only English-speaking country in South America<\/em>, was once a British Colony.<\/p>\n<p>English, <em>spoken by a small fraction of the earth&#8217;s population<\/em>, is the language of trade and commerce internationally.<\/p>\n<p>Sugar production, <em>a dying industry<\/em>, attracted humans like ants to <a href=\"http:\/\/patrickcarpen.com\/guyana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guyana <\/a>only a few centuries ago.<\/p>\n<p>The United States of America, <em>the world&#8217;s most powerful nation<\/em>, speaks English as its official language.<\/p>\n<p>The United States, <em>a former British Colony<\/em>, gained independence from Britain in 1776.<\/p>\n<p>The Revolutionary War, <em>waged against Britain<\/em>, was a very costly and bloody war.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil,<em> the largest <a href=\"http:\/\/patrickcarpen.com\/countries-of-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">country <\/a>in South America<\/em>, is a booming economic giant.<\/p>\n<p>Venezuela, <em>a communist <a href=\"http:\/\/patrickcarpen.com\/countries-of-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nation<\/a><\/em>, is in economic ruins despite its unparalleled oil wealth.<\/p>\n<p>French Guiana, <em>a <a href=\"http:\/\/patrickcarpen.com\/countries-of-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">country <\/a>in South America<\/em>, is still shaded by the French flag.<\/p>\n<p>French, <em>the language of only a few <a href=\"http:\/\/patrickcarpen.com\/countries-of-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">countries<\/a><\/em>, is reputed to be the language of love.<\/p>\n<p>Canada, <em>the largest country in North America<\/em>, never severed ties with the British Crown.<\/p>\n<p>Jules Verne, <em>a French author<\/em>, wrote the classic novel &#8220;Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.patrickcarpen.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patrick Carpen<\/a>, <em>the author of this website<\/em>, is a famous Guyanese author.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The apposition is a word or word team that gives additional information about a noun or pronoun in a sentence.
