{"id":243,"date":"2014-04-11T18:06:04","date_gmt":"2014-04-11T18:06:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/patrickcarpen.com\/english-language\/?page_id=243"},"modified":"2018-08-16T16:39:53","modified_gmt":"2018-08-16T16:39:53","slug":"the-compound-noun","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/patrickcarpen.com\/english\/parts-speech\/the-basics\/the-noun\/the-compound-noun\/","title":{"rendered":"The Compound Noun"},"content":{"rendered":"Last updated: August 16, 2018 at 16:39 pm\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Photo by WikimediaImages\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/patrickcarpen.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/124\/2014\/04\/e132b30c2cf11c3e81584d04ee44408be272e1d11db2164093f1_640_compound.png?w=678\" alt=\"compound photo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A simple noun is one word that names a place, person, thing or idea, examples: fish, tooth, brush, hand, bag, fairy.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, <strong>a compound noun is a noun which is made by combining or compounding two or more simple nouns or words.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A compound noun may be made up of two or more words which stand separately, but still name just one person, place thing or idea, examples: bus stop, full moon.<\/p>\n<p>A compound noun may be made up of two or more simple nouns which are joined to make a new word, examples: handbag, football, toothbrush.<\/p>\n<p>A compound noun may be made up of two or more words which are connected with a hyphen, examples: runner-up, round-trip, mother-in-law.<\/p>\n<p>The compound noun may also be made of two simple nouns joined with the conjunction <em>and<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, the nouns, once separate in themselves, are now conceptualized as one.<\/p>\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Bread and butter is a delicious snack.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In the above sentence, &#8220;bread&#8221; and &#8220;butter&#8221; are fused as one thing. The idea is that bread by itself or butter by itself is not a delicious snack. What is a delicious snack is &#8220;bread and butter&#8221; when combined or fused with each other.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the two nouns &#8220;bread and butter&#8221; are conceptualized as one compound noun in the sentence &#8220;bread and butter is a delicious snack.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, they are two simple nouns in a sentence such as:<\/p>\n<p>Bread and butter are two common breakfast ingredients.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A simple noun is one word that names a place, person, thing or idea, examples: fish, tooth, brush, hand, bag, fairy.
