There is a saying that goes, “don’t compare your life with others, there is no comparison between the sun and the moon: they each shine in their own time.” And what a brilliant quote that is!<\/p>\nThere is a saying that goes, “don’t compare your life with others, there is no comparison between the sun and the moon: they each shine in their own time.” And what a brilliant quote that is!<\/p>\n
“Everyone shines in their own time.” That’s a theme that runs through many classical works of arts, and it is something that we must understand if we are to become better and more productive human beings.<\/p>\n
When I was a teenager, I remember rolling in bed with laughter as Debbie, the girl next door, attempted to give English lessons to her neighbor’s kids. She was a few years their senior, so she would go over in the afternoons and “play the teacher.”<\/p>\n
But this young girl certainly didn’t master the art of English grammar, and it is for this reason that I use to laugh as her voice came through the window into my ears. It was quite an amusement.<\/p>\n
Needless to say, Debbie didn’t perform that well in CXC English. But she went to master her father’s trade. She became a dentist. One of the best that is. And she would do artfully skilled work in the wink of an eye – raking in thousands of net profit dollars while I still struggled to make ends meet on an English teacher’s salary. Well who’s laughing now?<\/p>\n
“The Song of the Banana Man,” is a classic piece of poetry that embodies that theme: Everyone shines in their own time.” It tells the story of a tourist turning up his nose at the ragged looking banana planter in Jamaica. But then the banana man proceeds to tell his side of the story, and we realize that “everyone shines in their own time.”<\/p>\n
