Being able to navigate folders in a windows computer is one of the keys to becoming a master of saving and retrieving information, and consequently, increasing your productivity.
For the internet generation, that is, just about all the young kids growing up today, navigating folders on any computer is second nature. It’s as simple as eating a piece of cake.
But for the baby boomers, navigating folders can be tricky business. This article is written for the older generation in mind – those who are not so tech savvy or computer literate. But it is also useful for anyone who is not that versed in handling the personal computer
At the same time, even some of the youngsters might find the information on this page enlightening and informative.
So without further ado, let’s go ahead to our lesson.
A folder is a special compartment on your computer’s hard drive where you store information such as documents, music, pictures and other “files.” Just like the real world folder that you find in a filing cabinet, a computer folder has a name, and possibly, a date. It’s up to you what you want to name your folder, and what use you put it to.
For example, most computers already come outfitted with a “Music” folder. The Music folder is intended for you to store all your music such as MP3 files, etc. But inside of the Music folder, you might have “sub folders” such as “Justin Bieber Music” and “Iggy Azalea Music.”
Almost invariably, a folder is symbolized by a yellow folder-looking icon, as you can see below.
As you can see from the screenshot above, there’s a “Desktop,” “Documents,” “Music,” “Video” and several other folders on this particular computer.
The above screenshot shows the default folder settings that come with the Windows 10 Personal Computers. Other versions of Windows will have similar settings. The user has the option of deleting any of those folders, renaming them and adding other folders to the computer.
